Recording ae external source into my Mac Book Pro

Hi,

I am trying to take the output of a microphone mixer to record into my Mack Book.

The cable that I am using is female XLR to male mini-jack. Nothing happens.

I was told that the headphone output is also the microphone input.

I see that the Apple mini-jack has three rings around it. I am guessing one ring from mic input the other two for audio (left and right) for the out.

Does anyone know where I can get a cable made that would achieve this for me.

I have been trying for weeks and it is becoming frustration.
